This resulted in 26 reprieves and no executions between March and October 1948, giving a total for the year of just eight. A New Yorker who founded the Mormon church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) after claiming to have received a new set of gospels from an angel. Mathews County, Virginia, Roster of Ex-Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Living in the County of Mathews, Virginia, made by J. New York: Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, 1971. Stuart had ridden circles around the Union (literally, in Stuart's case during the Peninsula Campaign), and it was time to out-do the Confederates in cavalry expeditions. Bills to abolish slavery were introduced in the General Assembly in 1796 and '97. President Lincoln declared that the Union would retaliate if black Union Prisoners of War were tortured by their Confederate captors, but this declaration was largely ignored. Letter, 12 January 1862, from Cyrus Monroe Booth of Company E, 27th New York Regiment, to his sister Emma informing her that he is sending her a picture of him, and describing the return to the regiment of 35 men captured at the first battle of Manassas (Bull Run).

To address the problem of farm credit, the platform proposed a “sub-treasury” plan by which the government would store non-perishable farm produce in national warehouses and give loans to farmers to whom it belonged up to but not more than 80% of it value. Planters were consequently strapped for capital in the years immediately after the war, and this affected their options with regard to labor contracts with the freedmen and in their dealings with capital markets to obtain credit for the planting season.
