Ravel continued his support and involvement with SMI (Société musicale indépendante), a group he helped found with his contemporaries in Paris who sought to support and promote new music, particularly from French and British composers. Painted by a legendary portraitist, whose subjects included Nicholas II, Tolstoy and Mussorgsky, it captures Glinka musing on the composition of the opera that would secure his renown – Ruslan and Ludmila.

We can date the portrait to around 1145, since Hildegard herself writes, “When I was 42 years and seven months old, a burning light of tremendous brightness coming from heaven poured into my mind. Mahler’s resulting depression led him to a brief period of therapy with Sigmund Freud. As a believer Mahler was also more culturally German than narrowly Austrian. Of the complete sincerity of their opposition Mahler could not convince himself. He suffered a heart attack in 1918 from which he never fully recovered. In Austria, Mahler's work experienced a brief renaissance between 1934 and 1938, a period known today as 'Austrofascism', when the authoritarian regime with the help of Alma Mahler and Bruno Walter, who were both on friendly terms with the new chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg, sought to make Mahler into a national icon (with a status comparable to that of Wagner in Germany). [159] It is a little known fact that Mahler's music was performed during the Nazi era in Berlin in early 1941 and in Amsterdam during the German occupation of the Netherlands by Jewish orchestras and for Jewish audiences alone; works performed included the Second Symphony (Berlin), the First and Fourth Symphonies, and the Songs of a Wayfarer (Amsterdam). [160] According to American composer David Schiff, his compatriot Leonard Bernstein used to imply that he had single-handedly rescued Mahler from oblivion in 1960, after 50 years of neglect.

The rising melody line from the adagietto on the fifth symphony makes an appearance in its finale, and again in revised form in the finale of the seventh symphony. Though Mahler had always been of the opinion that the perfect opera and the daily performance were hopelessly incompatible, he could do nothing to change that condition -- but hearing how low was the pay of the musicians, he succeeded at least in having this increased.

I instantly realized that he had written among the greatest music ever composed. Vienneese composer and pianist Johannes Brahms made music for symphony orchestra’s ensembles, chorus, and the piano. Music may be wonderful because it plumbs emotional depths. There is both sadness and celebration in these virtuosic and technically demanding little gems (most apparently recorded for the first time or at least the first time in a while).

In all honesty, Opera Chic came for the symphony (we will forever admire the work of Béjart and for what he's done in revolutionizing contemporary dance, but his choreography doesn't speak to us like how we feel after a rousing Brahms or Beethoven) -- C'mon...who could pass up two of Stravinksy's coolest works? Calder’s Untitled, 1936 inspires a piece as timeless and ethereal as the original sculpture, while Miró’sWomen at Sunrise is treated with rhythmic fun.

Immediately Mahler threw himself heart and soul into the study of English, making such headway in a few weeks that he proudly wrote his reports from London in his newly "mastered" language. Another aspect, noticeable even in the first few pages, is how clear and revealing the sound picture is with every strand audible but all in excellent perspective and allowing us to benefit from Abbado's stunning ear for detail. Apart from their work together, both Kander and Ebb have enjoyed successful independent careers.
