I began to believe that it was normal and natural for women to base their sense of self-worth on how closely they approximated the images of women in magazines at the supermarket checkout counter. Curiously, as I spent much of my adult life in and out of India, I began to notice the same gendered phenomenon taking place. What, I wondered, was making women feel so deeply dissatisfied with their bodies and, by extension, themselves? This book is about the women who are considered the most beautiful in India because they fit a particular set of standards that influence women throughout South Asia.
Institutions such as Femina and Miss India do not exist in a vacuum; they affect and are affected by socioeconomic changes at both the international and state levels. It is self-evident that the Miss India pageant as Roopa Satyam experienced it in 1972 was a different cultural event than the media extravaganza of the 2003 pageant because each existed in a different India: the first still rooted in the postindependence protectionist economic policies that heavily restricted foreign investment and media, Beauty as Cultural Performance / 21 and the second that embraced the neoliberal economic regime advocated by the IMF.
