But as a child develops conceptual/linguistic skills, a richer history of personal experiences, and a fuller sense of the reality of others, a more cognitively “mediated” form of “associative empathy” can be involuntarily aroused in response to situations or experiences that are not immediately present and are merely heard about, remembered, or read about.

Is such a person being open minded? Prett y clearly not. And what seems to be missing is any sort of genuine openness to the possibility that the other person is in some respects correct in his or her opinion, any kind of even minimal sympathy, therefore, with what the other person thinks. So I think real objectivity and open-mindedness require one to have or to be able to acquire a certain degree or amount of sympathy with what others think, and such sympathy clearly means having an at least somewhat favorable opinion of what others think.

And by and large, the Romantic revolution never really affected that kind of philosophy or its immediate intellectual forebears. In a way, that isn’t surprising. Philosophers have long used reason as their tool and have thought of rationality as our most important or essential gift (Aristotle defined humans as rational animals). There is therefore a strong persisting tendency among philosophers in the English-speaking world to accept some of the basic tenets of Enlightenment thought. And since the Enlightenment in many ways saw itself as carrying forward the rationalistic classical thought of ancient Greece and Rome, there has also been a tendency to accept the rationalism that the Greeks saw as grounding both science and morality or ethics.
