The number of different components that go into making a single ‘‘system’’ can be staggering. Given this environment, it is hardly surprising that we continually hear about the ‘‘architecting’’ of IT. The role of the IT architect (and with it, both systems and corporate architectures) is growing. But was it always like this? Have we always had to architect solutions? The answer is yes, it was just different back then. This is a pertinent point on which to frame our brief view of the history of technology architectures.

This factor is affected by human resource policies, outsourcing approaches, the type of industry, internal culture, and political factors, among other things. Problems in this area tend to boil down to access to the right people with the right skills at the right time. We have experience with a government body whose policy changed from pro-contract resource to anti-contract resource, almost overnight. The IT organization was fundamentally stripped of its capability because of external influences.

The problem is the lack of a consistent approach for determining how e-business systems should be built and how they should fit into the overall IT environment. All investments in technology should be based on reasoned and structured assessments, taking into account the entire IT environment (while itself being driven by business strategies). Using an architectural approach, the organization can mitigate against the collapsing event horizon by making haste in a pragmatic manner. The architecture provides the necessary processes and artifacts to allow organizations to work smarter.
