This monograph developed from years of analysis into the auditory pathway and listening to of many species of marsupials. Its functionality is to offer biologists, in par ticular neurobiologists, a vast description and evaluate of what's recognized of the auditory sensory capacities and processing mechanisms during this huge order of mammals. My preliminary curiosity in marsupials built from collaborative paintings with Dr. Richard Gates at Monash and Melbourne Universities within the Nineteen Seventies and by way of interest as to if innovations concerning the auditory process was once inspired stemming from experiments regularly on family cats will be prolonged to mam mals of different orders. My next curiosity in Australian marsupials, aroused by means of collaboration with Dr. John Nelson at Monash college within the Eighties and Nineties, involved their auditory structures and behaviour according to se and never as primitive cousins of eutherians. extra lately, i've got collaborated with Dr. Bruce Masterton at Florida country college in experiences of recent global marsupials. His unhappy loss of life in 1996 has robbed neurobiologists of 1 of our so much provocative thinkers and speculation testers. i want to thank the dep. of body structure at Monash collage for making many amenities on hand to me, the nationwide healthiness and scientific learn of Australia and the Australian learn Council for supplying money for Council examine, and Jill Poynton and Michelle Mulholland, who illustrated this volume.

A tone was presented from one of two loudspeakers located at the end of two arms of a Y maze. Food dispensers were located at the base of the sound sources, and the animal received a food reward if it chose the correct loudspeaker. The loudspeaker receiving the pure tone was randomized, and no more than four successive trials were initiated from a speaker. The resulting audiogram, assessed using a similar range of test frequencies to those used by Frost and Masterton (1994), differed in one main respect from that study - thresholds.

2 Middle Ear of Marsupials The fact that the middle ears of some marsupials are not housed in a bulla but are separated from other structures laterally and caudally by soft tissues has been mentioned previously (Chap. 3). Bullae vary in size and construction among eutherians. , gerbils, kangaroo rats) are likely to have large bullae and vice versa. Following this line of reasoning, the lack of a bulla in marsupials would suggest that they are unlikely to have marked low-frequency sensitivity. Segall (1969) surveyed the auditory ossicles of marsupials.
