What, I wondered, was making women feel so deeply dissatisfied with their bodies and, by extension, themselves? This book is about the women who are considered the most beautiful in India because they fit a particular set of standards that influence women throughout South Asia.
Institutions such as Femina and Miss India do not exist in a vacuum; they affect and are affected by socioeconomic changes at both the international and state levels.
