As already indicated not all mosquitos can function as malaria vectors. In the case of human malaria only anopheline mosquitos can support, and transmit the parasite. Of the several hundred anopheline species only a handful are actually implicated. The other, and much more numerous, group of culicine mosquitos do not transmit human malaria although some do transmit other parasites and viruses pathogenic to man. DISTRIBUTION O F M O S Q U I T O S Mosquitos are found all over the globe except in the Arctic region and on the Antarctic continent.

1). After a day or so the first stage larva (first instar) emerges. The larva feeds on suspended particulate matter in the water but must spend some time at the water surface as it needs air for respiration. Two openings, or spiracles, are found at the tail end of the larva and it is through these that the larva gets air to breathe. The spiracles are closed during diving by water repellent valves. When disturbed the insect 'wriggles' through the water to relative safety, often to the bottom of the water collection.

By the time Ronald Ross went to medical school in 1874 Louis Pasteur was 52 years old and had an international scientific standing without equal.
