As already indicated not all mosquitos can function as malaria vectors. In the case of human malaria only anopheline mosquitos can support, and transmit the parasite. Of the several hundred anopheline species only a handful are actually implicated. The other, and much more numerous, group of culicine mosquitos do not transmit human malaria although some do transmit other parasites and viruses pathogenic to man.
