I wanted to use two different stocks of film. I wanted to use Plus X, which is a gentle type of film and you get a very pretty effect from it, in the house, and I wanted to use Tri-X, which at that time was very grainy, in the police station. I wanted a complete contrast. I never got it. There were a lot of things that I thought could have been a lot better. As a result of this experience I was fed up with films and went back to television. I went back and I did Playhouse 90. Yet film-making interested meI wanted to do it but I wanted to do it under the right conditions.
The first thing I ever shot, aside from using a home movie camera, was a film about the making of asphalt in Sherman Oaks, California. I went out there and discovered this whole photographic squadron was a real sham. They had two cameras and about 150 men and about six officers, none of whom had any experience in motion pictures at all.
