Example text

While the ethnopole is the home of a predominant diasporic group, or is at least imagined as such by the larger urban population, as in the case of Japantown, the panethnopole refers to a site inhabitated by groups with different ethnic origins, as in the case of the Mission District. Here one finds not only Mexican-Americans but also people from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Chile, and Peru. While the downtown area of San Francisco provides us with examples of a technopole (milieu of innovation) and exopole (edge city or milieu of services), the Castro District is a typical example of a homopole characterized by the sexual orientation of its population and the global network they are engaged in.

Furthermore, the role of the informal capital city may be directly reinforced by its global relations or indirectly reinforced by the global connections of the formal city in which it is an enclave. This informal urban system also implies a hierarchy of sites with the ethnopole at its apex or center. The dynamic of this informal urban system is unveiled not in the structuralist discourse of system analysis, but rather in the poststructuralist view of subjects serving as actors in their everyday transactional lives.

Since I will explain globalization from an analysis of ethnic enclaves, my approach is perspectival as well. I believe that this microlevel perspective, or microperspectival approach, is a necessary complement to the macrolevel because both are perspectival and address different issues that are nevertheless central to understanding the multiplex content and complexity of the local and global behaviors of these ethnopoles. Ethnopoles The city of San Francisco, which provides the context for this study, is punctuated by a number of global poles - a concentration of local activities that are globally produced - that form the tapestry of its human infrastructure or population composition.
