Compulsory attendance laws control children's time for approximately half a year of regular forty-hour workweeks each school year. The freedom of individuals to use this large block of time in ways more appropriate to their own needs and desires creates much more opportunity for meaningful learning. Purpose. When children are curious about (interested in) something, they can see a purpose to learn about it. Interest creates intrinsic motivation to learn. This leads to a quicker grasp of information, concepts, or skills desired.

I yielded to this rather loosely defined system of organization to bring some semblance of order to the ideas. You'll note that because so many ideas don't fit neatly into one, two, or even three subject categories, I created chapter 11, “Across the Curriculum,” in which to gather them. Having decided to organize the book by subject, I rejected the notion of adding age levels to the ideas for a couple of reasons. Critics who are sold on the order, measurability, and supposed accountability of traditional schooling charge that an educational approach incorporating a good deal of fun is somehow overly protective and fails to prepare children for life's hard knocks, the tougher lessons from which no one is immune. Certainly they're right that someday there may be times when life and learning aren't going to be a picnic for our children. Seeing to it, though, that the hard knocks start sooner rather than later, that learning becomes a chore on someone else's timetable using someone else's methods, especially at the tender ages of three, or five, or even eight years old, is counterproductive.
