In 1927, the American Association of State Highway Ofﬁcials published the Manual and Specifications for the Manufacture, Display and Erection of US Standard Road Markers and Signs. The manual was developed for application of rural highways. Then, in 1929, the National Conference of Street and Highway Safety published a manual for use on urban streets.
