It is not unsurprising that children with limited adult control, such as street and working children, have led to some of the more successful child-controlled initiatives (see Chapter 6). Lunberg et al. (2009) argue that children and young people acquire a level of autonomy about their own activities at rates that vary depending on their own traits and abilities, the preferences and resources of their parents, and their environment. Children and young people’s participation, then, is challenging for a host of ‘traditional’ ways of conceptualizing children and childhood, parents and parenthood, and adults and adulthood.
